Mercedes invited me to the Cotswolds to drive their newest A-Class and try out its new modern MBUX system. This is an essential launch for the brand, particularly in the UK. So how does it drive and what about that all essential Mercedes-Benz user Experience?
Wat is er veranderd?
One of the engineers on hand told us, barring a few nuts and bolts, this car is a complete clean sheet, re-design, but you can’t tell to look at it. sure it looks better, certainly a step forward as a design, but in that subtle way that only German car producers seem to be able to achieve. They take an existing model, make it look even better, whilst not alienating owners of the previous model or hurting their residuals too much either.
The new model will be many recognisable from its new lights with both the front and rears slimming down for a sharper look.
Mercedes told us the current UK fleet of A-Class cars is around 70% diesel. The new W177 designated car is 12 cms longer, 1.6 cms larger and has 29 litres of extra space in the boot. It launches in the UK this month, initially with 3 engine choices.
The entry model is the A180d SE with its all new 1.5L turbo diesel engine (116hp, up to 68.9 mpg) available from £25,800.
The petrol A200 (163hp, up to 51.4 mpg) is up next with a 1.3L turbo petrol motor, available from £27,500.
The current top of the tree is the A250 2.0L turbo petrol engine (224hp, 45.6 mpg combined) from £30,240.
While more engine options are promised for later, so far there’s no mention of a plugin hybrid like those already available in the C-Class and E-Class ranges. as with BMW-i, Mercedes have a sub-brand for their full battery electric cars (BEV) which will start deliveries of the first EQ model next year.
Back to the present, the slick 7-speed dual grasp automatic gearbox (with paddles) is the only one available if you want to purchase an A-Class best now. but that’s no hardship, it’s very smooth and once you go car you never go back.
A 6-speed manual is coming by the end of the year if you really want it and there’s talk of a 9-speed car appearing in the future too. A 4MATIC all-wheel drive version is promised for early 2019.
There are 3 trim levels to choose from, SE, sport and the tasty AMG Line option that both our test cars were fitted with.
As typical you can go nuts with options. For example the Multibeam LED headlights and 64 colour interior ambient lights are available as part of the £3,595 premium plus package that brings a host of other upgrades too.
Ride & Comfort
The old car’s ride had a credibility for being quite hard and Mercedes say this, along with decreasing road noise, were top of their list of things to fix in the new A-Class. While the less expensive models get rear torsion beam suspension, the higher priced A200 AMG Line and A250 AMG Line have an independent multi-link setup instead.
Our test drives were over a good mix of road types and both our diesel and petrol test cars were quiet, smooth and comfortable. klus geklaard.
The peaceful interiors were only disturbed when the power units were pushed. As you’d expect the performance of the 1.5 diesel (0-62mph in 10.5 seconds) could best be described as ‘adequate’, it’s not an engine choice I would personally consider. The 1.3 petrol on the other hand feels much more lively (0-62mph in 8 seconds) and it’s the one I’d plump for.

The Tech
But lets face it, you’re probably here to read about the technology in the new car, so what’s it like?
Mercedes say the tech in the new A-Class has trickled down from their flagship S-Class model, and it shows. Daimler have again teamed up with Harmann to produce the NTG6 with NVIDIA hardware that powers the MBUX.
A pair of 7″ screens are standard across the range. They do look a little on the small side and they have a stepped bezel around the displays. but upgrade just the middle monitor to 10.25″ (available with the £1,395 executive package) and then they both live behind a single, flush piece of glass that sweeps from behind the wheel to the middle of the dash giving a very cool flight-deck Look.
If you want to go large you can choose two of the 10.25″ displays (1920 x 720 pixels, 200 dpi) with the £2,395 premium package
The screen in the middle of the car supports capacitive multi-touch and if you own any smart phone from the last few years then you already know how to use its Linux powered UI. Usefully you can rearrange the icons on the home screen just like your smartphone too.
The steering wheel has touchpads on each side allowing easy up/down, left/right swipes and pushes to select each display option. Customisations are plentiful and if you ever get lost then a long press of the best hand Back button will return you to the default display.
The old rotary dial has been replaced with a capacitive touchpad in the centre console. It delivers a third input method while its haptic vibration offers good feedback voor je vingers.
Het MBUX-systeem bewaart ook uw voorkeuren in een ‘profiel’, zodat u een set voor uzelf en één voor uw partner kunt hebben. Als u uw profiel selecteert, herinneert u uw zitpositie, voorkeursverlichtingskleur en radiostation aan.
Het systeem is goed doordacht en terwijl andere auto’s vergelijkbare opstellingen hebben (zelfs de relatief nieuwe E-klasse), heb ik nog niet gezien die zo intuïtief zijn om te gebruiken. De balans tussen de diepte van de kenmerken en bruikbaarheid lijkt gewoon ongeveer goed.
CarPlay, Android-auto en het Chinese Baidu Carlife-systeem zullen allemaal beschikbaar zijn na de eerste OTA-update van het systeem. De Center Console herbergt een nieuwe USB-C-aansluiting voor uw telefoonverbinding. Nerds zoals wij zullen ons verheugen, oude mensen zullen kreunen (zorg voor een nieuwe kabeltelevisie of -adapter).
Spraakbediening
Over het algemeen zijn er weinig technologieën die het in zo’n slechte staat in het wild maken als auto-spraakbesturingssystemen. Ik moet nog bezitten of een auto bezorgen met een spraakcontrolesysteem dat ik ooit zou overwegen om langdurig te gebruiken.
Het is dubbel verwerkt, want we worden allemaal zo gewend aan spraakherkenning die eigenlijk werkt, zoals Amazon Alexa, Google Home en in mindere mate Apple’s Siri. Hun technologie is gebaseerd op de cloud en dus verbetert, in tegenstelling tot het systeem in veel auto’s die al verouderd zijn op de dag dat u bezorgt.
Gelukkig heeft Mercedes het licht en de nieuwe ‘Hey Mercedes’ intelligente spraakherkenningssysteem gezien, werkt eigenlijk!
Naast het kiezen van contacten, kunt u het om een weer-update vragen om ergens te navigeren, het audiosysteem inschakelen en een invoer of zender selecteren, uw verwarmde stoelen inschakelen en de cabinetemperatuur bijvoorbeeld wijzigen. We hadden de auto gevraagd hoe het ons zou kunnen helpen elke keer dat we het woord ‘Mercedes’ zeiden, en momenteel kun je het gestelde woord niet veranderen. Dit zou minder een probleem zijn als je niet testen met het besturen van veel Mercedes en over hen in de auto praat met een collega
Je kunt zeggen “Hé Mercedes” en wacht op de auto om te vragen hoe het kan helpen, of je kunt rechtstreeks in je vraag starten, “Hé Mercedes, zet de Chauffeurs verwarmde stoel in”. Bekijk onze video hierboven voor een idee van hoe het werkt.
Augmented Reality Sat Nav
Dat NTG6-systeem dat ik eerder heb besproken, maakt dit de eerste auto met een AR-Capable Infotainment-systeem.
De ARSN is een optie £ 495 die de kaartrichtingen over de top van de live videofeed van de camera aan de auto ligt. Dit biedt een zeer coole next-gen-ervaring die onze Duitse ingenieur perfect vond als “Mario Kart Satnav”.
De veiligheidstechnologie bevat actieve remassist en actieve lane-houd-assist die zowel standaard in alle modellen zijn. De A-Klasse kan semi-autonoom rijden in bepaalde voorwaarden met het driving supportpakket dat tegen het einde van het jaar in het VK beschikbaar is.
OTA-upgrades
De nieuwe A-Klasse heeft een dual-line simkaart aan boord met een 4G-aansluiting. Er wordt één regel betaald door Mercedes en wordt gebruikt om uw auto-over-the-air updates te verzenden. Hierdoor kunnen nieuwe softwarefuncties worden toegevoegd aan de beschikbare hardware. Het systeem biedt ook ingenieurs om te controleren welke menu-items velen zijn die typisch door stuurprogramma’s worden gebruikt, waardoor ze de meest populaire verhuizen, nog meer naar voren en de UI in de loop van de tijd verbeteren.
OTA-updates kunnen ook worden gebruikt om de firmware van modules rond de auto te upgraden, zodat u kunt profiteren van fixes die vanuit huis worden toegepast in plaats van uw dealerschap te bezoeken. Het is tijd dat alle auto’s deze functie hadden.
Gegevens voor dingen zoals muziekstreaming op de andere regel wordt betaald door de klant.
Waardige opvolger
De vorige A-klasse was hier een groot succes, zeker het VK was de grootste markt wereldwijd vorig jaar met de omzet van meer dan 43.000 eenheden. Dat maakt het hier ook Mercedes Best Selling (Single Lichaamsvorm).
De A-klasse is ook een essentiële Halo-auto voor Mercedes. Het is succesvol geweest bij het verleiden van een jongere demografie aan het merk en meer dan 60% van de kopers is bij het verstrekken van Merc van andere autofabrikanten.
Voor velen is het infotainmentsysteem in de auto een van de belangrijkste kenmerken van hoge prioriteit geworden bij het beslissen welke auto te kopen. Maar veel te vaak verlaten de eigenaren van nieuwe auto de handelaar in een toestand van verwarring en geven ze vaak op om hun auto’s te gebruiken vanwege hun clunky uis.
Maar de nieuwe A-klasse heeft dingen verplaatst. De 4e generatie auto zou alleen zijn positie in het segment moeten versterken met een modern systeem dat eigenlijk een genot om te gebruiken is. Smart Home Tech is naar de auto verhuisd en nu voelt je tweede vele dure aankoop in het leven niet meer alsof het jaren achter je smartphone is.
Als je na een kwaliteit, stijlvolle, comfortabele en nuttige hatchback hebt, met een prachtig interieur en een infotainmentsysteem dat is die leidt, kijk dan niet nog meer dan de nieuwe Mercedes-Benz A-klasse.
